08 The Asteroid Belt

Located between Mars and Jupiter, numerous irregular asteroids orbit the sun. These rocky worlds range in size from 1 km in diameter to dwarf planet Ceres, which is 950 km in diameter.

There is an estimate of 1.1 to 1.9 million asteroids that are larger than 1 km (0.6 mile) inside the Asteroid Belt. There are millions more smaller than 1 km.

FUN FACTS

Approximately 150 asteroids have orbiting moons.

About half of the entire mass of the asteroid belt is found in the four largest asteroids, Ceres, Vesta, Palas and Hygiea.
