17 Neptune's Moons
Neptune has 14 known moons with Triton being its only major moon.
The moons of Neptune are named after the gods and characters associated with water found in Greek or Roman mythology. The sea god Triton was the son of Poseidon, the Greek equivalent of Neptune.
Triton is by far the largest moon of Neptune and the seventh-largest moon in our solar system. This unusual world is so far from the sun that average surface temperatures are -400°F (-240°C)! Ice volcanoes on the moon's surface shoot out mixtures of liquid nitrogen, methane and dust. These materials instantly freeze in the atmosphere and snow down to the surface. Triton is the only large moon in our solar system to orbit in a direction opposite that of the planet’s rotation.
