16 Neptune

The last major planet in our solar system, Neptune is an icy world with six faint rings. The planet has extreme weather with wind speeds greater than 1,200 mph (2,000 kph).

Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to reach Neptune. Almost all of our knowledge of Neptune is based on this mission’s research.

NAMING

Discovered in 1846, Neptune was named after the Roman god of the sea.

FUN FACTS

Neptune's blue color is caused by methane in its atmosphere.

Dark spots are a series of storms found in Neptune’s atmosphere. They form and dissipate every few years. Discovered by Voyager 2 in 1989, Neptune’s Great Dark Spot was larger than Earth before it disappeared.
