02 Mercury

Orbiting closest to our sun, Mercury is the smallest of the terrestrial planets. It has a rocky, cratered surface similar to Earth's moon.

NAMING

The Romans named it after their speediest messenger god because it crossed the night sky faster than any other planet.

FUN FACTS

Due to extremely hot temperatures of up to 800°F (427°C) during its day, Mercury cannot keep an atmosphere. Temperatures drop to -300°F (-183°C) at night.

If someone stood on the surface of Mercury at its closest point to the sun, the sun would appear three times the size as viewed on Earth.
