07 Mars' Moons

PHOBOS

DEIMOS

Mars has two oddly-shaped moons, Deimos and Phobos. They are believed to be captured asteroids and are among the smallest moons in the solar system.

NAMING

In 1877, Asaph Hall discovered the Martian moons and named them after the mythological sons of Ares, the Greek counterpart of the Roman god Mars.

PHOBOS

The largest of the two moons, Phobos orbits Mars three times a day.

DEIMOS

Orbiting Mars every 30 hours, Deimos is the smaller of the two moons. It orbits closest to Mars.
