21 Makemake

Makemake is a frozen, reddish world located inside the Kuiper Belt. Like Haumea, Makemake was discovered recently.

Makemake was discovered in 2005 and classified as a dwarf planet in 2008.

NAMING

Makemake is named after the creator of humanity and the god of fertility according to the Rapa Nui mythology of Easter Island.

FUN FACTS

Due to its extremely low temperatures, the surface is believed to be covered with methane, ethane and possibly nitrogen ices.
