NAMAKA

HIʻIAKA

Found inside the Kuiper Belt, Haumea is an oddly shaped dwarf planet. Since Haumea was recently discovered, little is known about this icy world.

Haumea was first discovered in 2003 and classified as a dwarf planet in 2008.

NAMING

Haumea is named after the Hawaiian goddess of childbirth and fertility.

FUN FACTS

Haumea’s quick rotation (3.9 Earth hours) causes the unique, elliptical shape.

Like Pluto, Haumea's orbit is eliptical. It also orbits the sun at a 28° angel from the eight major planets.

MOONS

Haumea has two known moons. Named after the mythological daughters of Haumea, Namaka and Hi’iaka are very small compared to the planet.
